While sailing in the Optimist Trevor competed in one European Championship, finishing 36th; two South American Championships, finishing 20th and 3rd; and three World Championships, finishing 22nd, 46th, and 28th. After aging out of the Optimist, Trevor moved to his grandmother's farm in Vermont where he took a year away from sailing to enjoy the farm life. Ever the competitor, Trevor joined his high school soccer team and tennis team. By his sophomore year Trevor returned to sailing locally to gear up for Laser Radial Worlds, where he finished 18th. While in high school, Trevor also competed in two youth championships in the Club 420.

Trevor attended Hobart and William Smith Colleges where he majored in architecture and double minored in environmental studies and geoscience. While in college Trevor was a three time All-American skipper. He was part of the winning team at both the 2005 Team Racing and Coed National Championships, he was second at the 2006 Singlehanded National Championship, and his teams finished third at both the 2006 and 2007 Team Racing National Championships. Trevor was awarded the 2007 College Sailor of the Year and was the co-recipient of the Francis C. "Babe" Kraus Memorial Award, presented annually to the Hobart senior whose sportsmanship, leadership and scholarship during his career warrants the title "Athlete of the Year".

After graduation Trevor began an Olympic campaign in the Laser for the 2007 Olympic Trials in Newport RI. With only four months of training Trevor managed to place 4th in the top-tier field of 33.
