Gold Fleet Here We Come!

Gold Fleet Here We Come!

January 6, 2010, 5:15pm

We did it! With our backs up against the wall we sailed the way we knew we could.  Our 4-9-10 was by no means perfect, but it got the job done.  Having sailed in the morning group, we were forced to wait for the afternoon group to complete their three races for scores to come out.  We now sit in 24th with 79 points.  We are tied with the 23rd and 25th place teams and one point ahead of 26th.  It is not a euphemism when coaches and sailors say “every point counts!” The first race was the highlight of the day,...

Big Breeze on Day 2 of Qualifying

Two races were sailed in both fleets on the second day of the qualifying series.  The wind direction was the same as the first day of racing, offshore, though the strength was up considerably.  Overall, the breeze could be described as 14-25 knots, puffy, and shifty.  The trying conditions made for a fair amount of carnage from the top of the fleet to the bottom.  In the eight laps we sailed, both races were 4-lap marathons, we found ourselves capsized twice.  Once we flipped as a result of overstanding the leeward mark...

Consistent Finishes in Difficult Racing on Day 1 of the Worlds

The Northerly wind ranged from 6 to 16 knots, and through 60 degrees.  The weather mark was practically on the beach.  Good for spectators, not the best for those trying to stay ahead in a race.  With all the challenges, we came out of the day with a fair 14-11-16 score-line.  While we have come to expect better of ourselves, we can come away from the day reassured of our ability to fight in the thick of the fleet and minimize big losses. The upwind sailing came relatively easy for us, and we found ourselves in the top ten a...

Looking to Start 2010 with a Bang at the Worlds!

The boat is ready, the sailors are prepared, and the forecast is good.  As most will be heading back to work or school looking for a fresh start in 2010, we are ready to start the New Year with a bang ourselves.  The World Championship comes early this year, as racing begins on Monday, January 4.  We can hardly wait for the start gun to go off for Race 1.  We have been here in the Bahamas since Dec. 27th, and we have seen the quiet resort of our training camp in early December transform into a one-stop regatta venue.  T...

2009 Wrap Up; What a Year!

2009 Wrap Up; What a Year!

December 17, 2009, 10:28am

We are just now home from a highly productive two-week training camp in Freeport, Bahamas, which brings to a close an incredible year of sailing.  Since January, we have sailed our 49er in Miami, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Croatia, and England.  We have seen some amazing things, and more importantly we have learned an incredible amount.  Now that we have a short time for reflection, it is hard to believe how far we have come and how we have gotten here. Our training camp in the Bahamas included an informal, yet well ...

Bahamas Training Going Well

Bahamas Training Going Well

In a new experience for us, we are competing in a Coaches’ Regatta at the 2010 Worlds site in the Bahamas.  Racing for 25 of the top 49er teams from around the world is being run by a collection of coaches for the benefit of all involved.  The breeze was good for the first day of racing on Sunday, and the competition is incredible.  Overall, we are happy with our performance thus far, and we have been able to take away some great lessons as well. We have been here for nearly a week already in training, and the conditions ha...

Stateside Training Camp a Huge Success!

We’ve made it home after a successful two and a half weeks of training, rigging, and boat transporting.  While we were thrown a few curveballs in terms of logistics, we made the most of it and certainly feel more prepared for the fast approaching World Championship.  The first lesson learned came long before we made it on to the water.  While we were told the container with our new boat and our Finnish training partners’ new boat would arrive on Monday, October 26, it did not in fact arrive until Tuesday, November 2.&...

Since last sailing together in the Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth, we have been quite busy.  Many of you should have heard from us in our latest mailing, and we offer sincere thanks for your generosity.  We simply could not have accomplished any of our success to this point without the help and support of our family and friends. We have a new website!  It is still at http://storckmooresailing.com.  If you cannot see it at first, you may have to hit the “refresh” button in your browser.  We are hoping to b...

Sail for Gold Wrap Up

Sail for Gold Wrap Up

September 20, 2009, 1:28pm

We finished the event in Weymouth with three races on Friday, September 18. With a solid 14-7-11 score-line, we moved up to 15th overall. We learned a vast amount, and we performed under pressure at the end of the event. The Sail for Gold Regatta culminated a long season of racing in Europe. The final day gave us the chance to put all we learned on display for the final time in 2009. Our starts were not great, as each one that got away was under a black flag. We could not afford to find any letters in our scores at the end of the day, so we pla...

Long Day on the Water in Weymouth

Long Day on the Water in Weymouth

Erik Storck

September 17, 2009, 8:12pm

This will be a short update after a long day. We started our first race at about 2:45 PM. There were four races, and we got off the water near 7:00 PM. The wind was up and down with very large swell coming in the bay as well. The conditions were quite challenging, and we finished off the day in 17th place after scoring a 17-10-24-26. Tomorrow is a new day. We are going to be racing in the afternoon again, after the Stars are finished. We will see if they intend to do three or four races. All we can do is go out and make the most of whatever rac...
